Paper Plate Spider Web

Today we made spider webs (for WHITE week!) by cutting the middle from a small paper plate and stringing yarn through hand-punched holes.

Joel and I were quite the team last night during commercial breaks of Castle, our must-watch show of the week.  I cut the middles, Joel punched the holes, and 13 spider web frames were done in no time. (Thanks, Joel!)

At school, I cut the yarn and tied one end on to the paper plate for the kids.  I wrapped a bit of scotch tape around the loose end for easier stringing and gave a brief demo on going across the plate and over versus under. Every now and then Mrs. Althoff or the associate had to unstitch a couple steps, but we didn’t worry too much if someone missed a hole or doubled up on a hole.

We tied a small loop with the extra yarn when the kids were done weaving so they could hang them at home, and let each kiddo choose a couple spiders to place on his or her web.

Fun spider song for today:

SPIDER DANCE  (Jean Warren)

Tune: “Farmer In The Dell”

We sang it like this:

The spiders crawl all around, the spiders crawl all around, all around the web they go, the spiders crawl all around.

Verses:

Spiders crawl around, (children crawl around)
Spiders go up and down, (stand up, bend down)
Spiders make a web, ( join right hands to form a spoke)
Spiders circle ‘round. (walk around in a circle together)

Spiders all about, (repeat crawl action)

Spiders make a web,

Spiders now sit down. (children sit down)

The kids LOVED this song!

Fun spider activity:  We used hula hoops and put one bug (kid) in each of three hoops.  As we sang the verses, the bugs went to get more friends.  When we got to four bugs, the spider (Mrs. Althoff) ran around and scared the kids out of the webs.  The bugs regrouped and we began again.

FOUR LITTLE BUGS (Jean Warren)

One little bug went out to play,
On a spider’s web one day.
He had ever so much fun,
He called for another bug to come.

Two little bugs went out to play,
On a spider’s web one day.
They had ever so much fun,
They called for another bug to come.

Three little bugs went out to play,
On a spider’s web one day.
They had ever so much fun,
They called for another bug to come.

Four little bugs went out to play,
On a spider’s web one day.
They got stuck, all in a bunch.
And along came spider, in time for lunch!
