homemade doughnuts

While Joel played in the hotel arcade with the kids, I made a quick run to the neighboring Tanger outlet center.  I wanted to find a new pair of sneakers for Emma, but I was also secretly hoping they had a kitchen store that stocked doughnut pans.  Success on both, so this morning we made homemade doughnuts for breakfast.

I’ve been following Iowa Girl Eats for several months, and she recently posted a slew of doughnut pan-friendly recipes.

We made this chocolate doughnut recipe, and followed the recipe exactly except for adding cocoa to the icing recipe.  (per Miss Emma’s request)  They took 30 minutes start-to-finish, and that included a lot of child labor.

The recipe calls for nutmeg, and the the author mentions that this may seem weird to people, but nutmeg is what gives a doughnut its doughnutty taste.  She was absolutely right – this would have been just a muffin without that nutmeg.

My only suggestion would be to let the doughnuts rest a bit before eating -the glaze was soooo messy because we had to eat them right away!

Hooray for lazy mornings and doughnuts!
